Cleansers: The Underrated MVP

Let’s be honest—cleansing isn’t the sexiest step in a skincare routine. It doesn’t glow, plump, or resurface (at least not dramatically). But how you cleanse sets the tone for everything that follows. Get it wrong, and you’ll be layering expensive serums over dirty, unprepped skin. Get it right, and everything works better.

First, cleansers are on the “save” end of the spectrum. Unlike serums or actives, they spend less time on the skin, so you don’t have to drop $$$. That said, some clinical cleansers are worth it if they support your skin goals (acne, aging, sensitivity, etc.).

Double Cleansing: The Real Deal

If you wear makeup, tinted SPF, or any kind of long-wear product (which most of us do), double cleansing is a must. Here’s the breakdown:
(1) Step One: Oil-Based Cleanser or Makeup Remover
This breaks down oil-based impurities like sunscreen, makeup, sebum, and pollution.

(2) Step Two: Water-Based Cleanser
This removes sweat, dirt, and anything left behind—without stripping the skin.

Do I have to double cleanse in the morning too?

You don’t need to double cleanse in the morning (unless you sleep in full glam—no judgment), but it’s non-negotiable at night if you wear SPF, which you should be.

What about face wipes or micellar water?

Face wipes? Hard no. They smear makeup around and rarely cleanse much of anything. Micellar water? Fine in a pinch, but I wouldn’t recommend for daily use. Always rinse.

My Cleanser Picks: The Workhorses I Trust

These are solid, no-frills, derm-grade cleansers that get the job done without wrecking your barrier.

  • SkinCeuticals Simply Clean – ~$39 (my personal favorite)
A gel cleanser with a light exfoliating effect. Great for combo/oily skin.
  • SkinMedica Facial Cleanser – ~$40
Mild, a luxurious gel, and ideal for normal to dry skin types.
  • ZO Skin Health Gentle Cleanser – ~$50 (if I ever won the lottery, this is on the list of “daily” things)
A little foamy, a little luxe. Cleans well without stripping.
  • ZO Skin Health Exfoliating Cleanser – ~$50
Contains glycolic and salicylic acids. A good option for those dealing with breakouts or congestion.
